Popular Rancho Santa Fe Antique Shop to Host Pre-Holiday Estate Auction

Rancho Santa Fe – With Christmas on the way, Rancho Santa Fe residents may want to make note that one of the area’s favorite antique shops is now hosting estate auctions. Estate auctions are a great way to pick up unusual, last minute gifts and decorative items for the home. McNally’s RSF Estate Auctions, a division of The McNally Company Antiques, is the business behind this latest offering. They’re set to hold their next estate auction at 11 a.m. on November 16th in Rancho Santa Fe. Instead of being held at the antique shop, the event will take place at the Rancho Santa Fe Garden Club’s Avenida De Acacias location.

One of the items slated to go up on the auction block this month is a Tiffany turtleback lamp that features a bird skeleton base. In general, Tiffany lamps date back to the 1800s. That’s when native New Yorker, Louis Comfort Tiffany, began selling his wares. During the course of his business, he employed many artistic women who contributed heavily to his product line. The list of designers includes, but isn’t limited to Clara Driscoll, Alice Gouvy and Lillian Palmie.

It is believed that the turtleback design was created in 1905. The identity of the actual designer has not been published, although many collectors have speculated that it was one of Clara Driscoll’s creations. As for the bird skeleton base, it was likely created in same manner as many other Tiffany lamp bases. They were typically handcrafted out of wax or plaster first. Afterward, the forms were sent to Corona, Queens to be cast in bronze alloy and mass produced. The bird skeleton bases were usually stamped underneath of the legs with a number and the words, TIFFANY STUDIOS NEW YORK.” It is widely assumed that they first appeared on the market in 1905 too.

To learn more about the Tiffany lamp and other items scheduled to go up for auction in the weeks ahead, please contact The McNally Company Antiques or McNally’s RSF Estate Auctions in Rancho Santa Fe directly.
